Prairie Biosciences Canada, in partnership with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, is pleased to announce Funding Day. This event is an opportunity for Alberta companies in the natural health products and cleantech sectors to develop strategic partnerships,  gain access to funding and secure the resources they need to grow their businesses.

Using a computerized match-making process supported by an online survey, companies will meet one-on-one with various funders, investors and service providers. The meetings are scheduled in seven-minute intervals enabling participants to conduct introductory meetings in a timely and efficient manner.


Nov. 20 | Calgary

Protein Industries Canada has partnered with MLT Aikins to provide an IP workshop for PIC members and those considering a PIC membership. The workshop is open to all members of the value chain and will focus on increasing knowledge and understand of IP as well as communication regarding PIC’s IP policies related to projects. The workshop will contain three modules:

  1. Protein Industries Canada Introduction and Update

Protein Industries Canada will introduce the workshop by providing an overview of PIC’s objectives, priorities and opportunities for Supercluster engagement.

  1. IP Fundamentals

Here we will discuss the various forms and types of IP, from patents and trade secrets to plant breeders’ rights and copyright. The goal of this module is to create awareness and understanding of the forms of IP that may be relevant to or arise in the course of collaborative projects, and that all members of the value chain may consider as part of an overall corporate IP strategy.

  1. Best Practices

This module will focus on industry best practices for IP management, covering 5 distinct areas;

  • How to ensure your organization is well paced to seek IP protection
  • How to go about securing IP protection
  • How to maximize the value of IP through commercialization, collaboration and partnering
  • Key issues and items to consider in a Licensing or Commercialization Agreement
  • What you need to know about enforcement of IP
  1. Protein Industries Canada IP Requirements

In the final module, PIC will discuss the Supercluster’s approach to IP management including how Background IP and Foreground IP will be handled, the requirements of the IP Registry, and how we plan to work with consortia members on the development IP rationale and the negotiation of the Multi Party Master Project Funding Agreement.

To explore the value-added processing of crops such as pulses, canola and hemp, Plant Protein Alliance of Alberta is hosting a series of workshops in Red Deer, Taber and Grande Prairie.

About the Workshops

Please join us for presentations by industry experts Trevor Pizzey, president of anCeres Processing Solutions, David Fielder, a senior scientist with Alberta Agriculture, and Corey Keith, founder of consulting firm Keith and Associates.

After their talks will be a panel discussion with questions from the audience. Networking time to follow.

The Fractionation 101 Workshop will focus on very practical topics such as the various processes used to extract proteins and other ingredients from crops; markets for products and by-products; costs to construct processing facilities; key factors when deciding to build and locate facilities; who is investing and financing these facilities; and what can local governments and others can do to attract them.

The workshop will be a training opportunity for entrepreneurs and companies looking to build, supply or invest in fractionation or value-added processing, local governments, economic development groups, financial institutions, suppliers, food companies and consultants.

Trevor Pizzey

Trevor Pizzey, president of anCeres Processing SolutionsTrevor is the president of anCeres Processing Solutions, a Calgary-based engineering and project management firm with subject matter expertise in grain processing. He’s passionate about helping Western Canadian small- and medium-sized agribusinesses feed the world. Trevor is a specialist in managing the design and construction of grain processing facilities, including navigating the increasingly complex regulatory environment his clients operate in.


Trevor was raised on a pedigreed seed farm in western Manitoba, where the family business also included the operation of a special crops processing facility and a retail crop inputs outlet.

He graduated from the University of Manitoba, where he received his B.Sc. in Engineering (Industrial). His subsequent 30 years in the grain foods processing industry included leadership of Viterra’s $1B North American food ingredients manufacturing portfolio.

David Fielder

David Fielder, senior scientist with Alberta Agriculture & ForestryDavid is a senior scientist with the Bio-Industrial Opportunities Section of Alberta Agriculture & Forestry, where he has established a value-added fractionation program to help companies develop novel products and processes. This program can assist companies develop botanical ingredients from concept to pilot-scale process development. A number of his recent clients are focused on Natural Health Products as well as several non-food applications.

David received his master’s degree in natural product chemistry from Carleton University in Ottawa. He worked he worked as a research chemist for the federal department of Agriculture (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.) David then worked for two Canadian biotechnology companies, developing and commercializing botanical extracts for human and animal health. As a phytochemical, David has more than 25 years of experience working with a variety of plant materials, including cereal grains, oilseeds, herbs, algae and specialty botanicals.

Corey Keith

Corey Keith, owner of Keith & AssociatesCorey has helped companies and organizations think strategically and obtain financing for more than 35 years. He worked in the banking industry for 25 years, at one point managing a portfolio of $100-million dollars. He served as vice-president, business development, with an early stage technology company and as senior investment manager with a private investment firm. He formed his own business management consulting company in 2003, Keith & Associates.

As part of his consulting business, Corey founded and served as president of AVNet, a not-for-profit angel investor network that connected Alberta companies seeking investment with a national network of private investors. Corey is a past director of the Mississauga Technology Association, the Toronto Biotechnology Incubator and the Alberta Agrivalue Business Facilitators. He also served as one of 31 Challenge Panel members for the Province of Alberta’s “Results Based Budgeting” process. He currently serves on the board of PPAA.
